L'ile de Gorée is an island off the coast of Dakar. It played a big role as a slave-trading hub during the 15th to 19th centuries. The island is one of the first European settlements in Western Africa. The island's slave trade came to a halt when immigrants from France settled in Senegal during the 19th century.
